Subject: * HELP - COMMUNICATE TWO COMPUTERS *
To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu
Hello.
I'm new to this group.
I've some questions. Perhaps you will consider them stupid, but i don't think.
You can respond to me, if you have the answers. I thank you very much.
I'm originaire from a country 'X', I live in the country 'Y' .
I've two computers (DX.2 488-66) in home country 'X' and also 'Y'.
Those two computers runs under UNIX and Dos/Windows.
To communicate the two computers (between country 'X' and 'Y'),
for example sending fax to
my family, mail, doing rlogin..., the cost of telephone between countries
is very high and i can't support it.
My idea is to buy two talk-radio, and connect every radio to
my two computers.
First-Question ) Can I do this. If yes, can you give me the kind of
radio that i should buy. The preference a digital radio.
What's the limitation ?
Second-Question ) Should I buy an interface card to connect the talk-radio
to my computer. What is his name ( a modem card ?).
Probably, some programms and software will be needed to communicate
my computers.
Third-Question ) What I need as software. (TCP/IP ?, mail ? ...).
Forth-Question ) More information needed.
Thank you very much.

Yes, it would be excrutiatingly slow, even assuming that you could get a
license to do it. Why not do it via cellular telephony? It would be faster,
also provide a substantial second benefit, and would avoid the licensing and
equipment hassles.

I assume that either mil-std parallel or serial tone modems are available
to your organization. Don't a few US government agencies use either an
X.25 variant or even TCP/IP over HF using these types of modem?
Add ALE to increase the link reliability, and it might work fairly well!
just a thought.

Hi,
I'm working with a Kenwood 450SAT and a PK232 and trying to send
stuff with it, CW, Baudot etc etc.. I've made the cable from the PK232
to the 450 using the info from the 450 manual but I'm not sure of the
pinouts. Any body hooked this combo up before?
What pin/color wire arrangement did you use?
The pk232 is receiving data ok and displaying but when I transmit it
will key the transmitter but I'm not sure if any data is being sent.
ie I can't hear anything but a carrier on a seperate receiver.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The Netherlands, May 3, 1994.
Hello dear reader,
Today I distributed NET_Mac2.3.40.sea.hqx...
For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...
In this version of NET/Mac I implemented the following:
- Added 'chat' command
- Enhance syntax-checking for 'IP-number'-style parameters
- Make sure the mailaddress looks like: ...%...%...%...%...@...
- Improved the generation of From addresses for hop-to-hop
This release also includes a new NET/Mac Syntax DA.
This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/net/radio-netmac in
the Sumex-Aim archives.
The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
1) ucsd.edu, to the directory hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming.
If it's not there then look at hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.
It may have also been uploaded to:
oak.oakland.edu, to the directory pub/hamradio/mac/digital
Kind regards,
Adam PA2AGA (e-mail: adam@gg.tno.nl )

Periodic Announcement - ARRL Email Information Server (info@arrl.org)
The services that the ARRL provides via the internet include the
Email Information Server and the Technical Information Service.
The Information Server is an automated mail server that gives you
access to many of information files relating to various facets of
Amateur Radio. You can retrieve any or all of these files by
sending an email message to info@arrl.org here at ARRL HQ.
Each file you request is then mailed to you automatically.
To use it, mail messages to:
info@arrl.org
Each line of the message body should contain a command as shown below.
The subject of your message is not processed and may be omitted. You
may place as many commands in a message as you want. The files you
request will be sent to you in separate messages. Only ASCII text
files are supported.
Valid INFO commands:
reply <address> (may be needed - see below for explanation)
help
index
send FILENAME (example: send prospect.txt)
quit
In the above message example, "help" retrieves a brief set of
instructions for info, "index" retrieves a list of available files
and "send prospect.txt" retrieves a text file containing information
on becoming a radio amateur.
Note to users with FTP capability: All of these files are also
available by anonymous ftp to oak.oakland.edu in the
pub/hamradio/arrl/infoserver area. Retrieve the file index.txt
in the /league sub-directory for a complete listing of available
files.
If you want to retrieve several text files with one message, use a
separate line for each "send filename" request.
Your From: field or Reply-to: field in your header should contain a
valid Internet address, including full domain name. If your From:
field does not contain a valid Internet address, the answer will not
reach you. If this is the case, then use the reply command as shown
above. When needed, this command should always be the first command
in your message.
IMPORTANT: Please use the quit command in your message. This will
prevent processing errors from message signatures.
PLEASE NOTE!: This is an automated system not capable of handling
written requests. Any questions on the info-server or the content
of any of its files should be directed to mtracy@arrl.org.
ALSO NOTE!: Do *NOT* reply to messages sent from info@arrl.org - the
reply address is redirected to keep bounced messages from endlessly
looping. Write a new message to info@arrl.org instead.
The Technical Information Service gives League members on the
internet better access to the knowledgeable technical staff here
at ARRL HQ. Questions relating to Amateur Radio and related
technical topics are welcome. To use this service, send a normal
e-mail message to tis@arrl.org with your question spelled out in
plain english. For best service, be as specific as possible and
keep your line length in messages to a maximum of 80 characters.
Due to personnel limitations, priority will be given to questions
from League members.
Best Regards,
Michael Tracy, KC1SX, ARRL Technical Information Services Coordinator
(e-mail mtracy@arrl.org)
Sample of files available from INFO: (There are lots more!)
Note - If you are not yet an Amateur Radio operator retrieve the
file prospect (send prospect) for information on how to easily get
started in this fun hobby.

I just tried to FTP it but the incoming directory seems to be empty!
If you can't find a file in a particular location, please feel free to
search the 00-Index.txt file in /pub/hamradio. Just perform a search on the
file, and the search will show you where in the directory structure the file
lives.
I try to keep the Index file as up-to-date as possible.
Hope this helps.
